TIRE BASICS

How to Determine Tire Sizes

Do you need new tires and you are unsure about what size tires you need?

We are here to help you with all your tire needs.  There are several ways to find your tire size information.  3 of the best ways to find the size of tire that your vehicle requires are the inside of your vehicle’s door jam, the vehicle owner’s manual, or the sidewall of the tire that is currently on the vehicle (if the tires are from the original manufacturer).  Note:  Some vehicles are equipped with staggered size tires, which means that the front tires and the rear tires are different sizes.  The Bridgestone graphic below is a great visual aid to use to find the tire size on your current tires.

Check Tire Pressures Monthly

Under normal conditions, tires can lose up to 1 psi (pound per square inch) of air.  Also, for every 10 degrees drop in temperature tires can lose an additional 1 psi.  A good guide for how much air to put in your tires is the manufacturer’s recommended air pressure listed on the sticker located on the inside of the door/door jamb.

Check Rotate Tires Every 3,000 – 5,000 Miles

Rotate your tires according to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations or the recommendations of the tire experts at Ross Tire & Service.  When recommending the frequency of tire rotations, some things to consider include driver’s routine, road conditions on roads frequently/regularly traveled, and weather conditions. If you do not have the vehicle manufacturers recommendations or you are unsure then play it safe and rotate every 3,000 miles. Ross Tire & Service offers free tire rotations every 3,000 miles with the purchase of a set of 4 tires!

Evaluate the Wear on Your Tires

Routinely look for signs of tread wear or damage on your tires.
Visually check for the following:
Exposed tread bars = tire should be replaced
Irregular should wear = have tire inspected
Outer/Shoulder wear on both sides = have tire inspected
Center wear = have tire inspected

Check for any other obvious signs of tire wear

Perform the Tire Penny Test by placing a penny in the tire. If you can see the head of Lincoln, the treads are worn and need replacing.
